Ah, ADHD. Do you feel like everyone and their mother is now convinced they have it? I’m not saying the symptoms aren’t real, but I do think there is a LOT going on behind the curtain on this one, and many people that have been labeled ADHD or convinced they have it from an instagram post actually have other imbalances going on.
What is ADHD?
According to the NIH, ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by an ongoing pattern of one or more of the following types of symptoms:
Inattention, such as having difficulty paying attention, keeping on task, or staying organized
Hyperactivity, such as often moving around (including during inappropriate times), feeling restless, or talking excessively
Impulsivity, such as interrupting, intruding on others, or having trouble waiting one’s turn
Now - some of these behaviors are quite common and normal - especially in childhood. When this becomes concerning is when these behaviors are constant and interfere with daily life such as in the home, at school (or work), and with friendships/relationships.
How prevalent is ADHD?
According to a 2022 national survey of parents, 11.4% of US children ages 3-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. According to the national institute of mental health, the prevalence of adult ADHD is estimated to be around 4.4% and higher in males.
It’s important to remember, that these numbers only reflect clinically diagnosed patients, so it’s likely these numbers are MUCH higher for people actually experiencing symptoms of ADHD.
Clinically, I see ADHD a ton in practice. However, there is SO much we can do about it and often I have seen it misdiagnosed and once lifestyle changes are met symptoms either completely resolve or get a ton better.
